Bulldog Judo Owner

Hi, I’m Sensei Jessica Merhout.

I remember when I was a child, feeling uncertainty about beginning martial arts. I wondered if I had what it took to succeed and I wasn’t the most athletic or confident child - quite the opposite. Little did I know that beginning my martial arts journey would be one of the most profound experiences of my life!

When I opened my school in 2015, I made a commitment to serving and empowering the community of Grand Prairie by teaching children and adults the confidence, leadership, and fitness skills that can only be achieved through martial arts.

What is Judo?

Judo is a martial art that was created in 1882 by Jigoro Kano as an alternative to different styles of jujitsu. In 1964, judo became an Olympic event and the the sport has been growing in the United States since then. Unlinke karate and tae kwon do, there is no kicking or punching in judo. The martial art combines throws and takedown techniques similar to wrestling with ground techniques such as pins, chokes, and arm bars. The chokes and arm bars do not start until teenage years and are practiced with extreme caution and respect to avoid injuries.

Judo can satisfy many athletic goals. The sport can teach discipline, respect, and coordication. It is a good work out and there are many competition opportunities. The body movements learned in judo are also a good base for self-defense. Let us know your reason for trying judo, and we will make sure your practice can help you reach your goals.
